Seven Gorgeous Eco-Friendly Beds

by Jennifer on October 14, 2010

As noted before, I’m always looking at bedroom pieces. Eco-friendly beds are expensive, especially after you factor in the mattress on top of the cost of the bed frame and headboard, so I’m reluctant to give in to one piece. Also, my bed is okay. Not great, but still holding up and I hate to ditch working furniture. Still, eventually here, we will need to invest in a new eco-friendly bed, so I look a lot. Here are seven I currently adore…

Grain Polished Pine Bed

Grain Polished Pine Bed: This bed is amazing and features antique pine from the interior of no longer used Wisconsin granary bins. The natural erosion of the pine over the past century creates that unique undulation you see at top of the bed. Really unique and just the best color. Available in Queen and King sizes from Wildflower Organics.

  • MASHstudios LAX Platform Bed: I LOVE this bed I saw at Modern Karibou. I love the simplicity of it plus I hate how stuff gets tossed under the bed, which won’t happen here. I especially adore the wall-mounted headboard with a sliding aluminum panel – perfect for extra storage space. MASHstudios uses only wood panels that are CARB compliant, which is the world’s most stringent production standard for formaldehyde emissions. The company also uses recyclable materials wherever possible and avoids products with VOC-releasing finishes and formaldehyde glues.
  • Wabi Sabi Bed: This bed is good if, like me, you’re local to PDX. Made by ECOpdx from 100% salvaged-recycled hardwoods, like all their pieces. This of course results in a totally eclectic and revolving range of furniture. Right now they’ve got this stunning piece available.
  • Curved Bed: This bed is a little shiny looking for me, but I love how the head board curves backwards allowing you a reclined seat in bed. Made with a responsibly harvested solid cherry frame and tiger maple veneer by Woodshanti Cooperative.
  • The Green Dream: I’ve had a platform bed for years, but headboard free. If I go platform again, I wouldn’t mind a headboard so I could place my bed at an angle if necessary, and so this bed fits. Made by IF Green, another PDX local, this bed is contemporary but efficient to build plus easy to ship and assemble. It’s available in FSC Alder, Maple or Birch while fabric options include rich brown compostable wool or black ultraleather – a polyurethane alternative to leather and vinyl.  I really love the contrasting light wood with the dark headboard shown above.
  • Sunset : This bed, by Urban Woods is a little cush for me (I lean toward rougher edged pieces). But while more elegant than I’d pick, it’s still lovely and I know plenty of people who would love it. The solid wood end pieces are set off beautifully by deeply tufted, organic cotton. This company designs pieces with reclaimed wood from local, vintage buildings that have been slated for tear down. They use low VOC, water based materials and water based, non-toxic stains as finishes and water soluble, formaldehyde free glues are used.
  • Irenic Bed: This new FCS certified bed from Wiggers is extra nice, made with curves, curves and more curves plus a calming sunshine ray pattern on the wood. Wiggers makes all their piece assembly line free and with their hand, old school style.

I love the antique pine, it would go perfect in my bedroom (and I so need a new bed)! My walls are even the same color as the walls in the photo.
