Soothing Organic Bedding

March 24th, 2008

Keep your mind calm and your space non-toxic with this relaxing organic bedding from Plover Organic.

organic duvet

My dream is to one day find the absolute perfect bedding set. My dilemma is that I’m a wee bit picky about my sleeping environment. I can see in my head what I want; the muted colors, textures, and scene laid out before me, but I never find it. I want something peaceful so I can relax. Nothing loud.

This design from Plover Organics may be close to what I’m always searching for. Plover bedding is made with 100% organic cotton, and even more cool, all their designs are block printed and quilted by hand. You’ll get colors unique to your bedding set - which is very cool. I love the mix and match vintage style look of the design above, especially the washed down colors. It’s pretty but not overly fussy.

Plover’s colors and designs come in a few mix and match choices. They have quilts, shams, pillow cases, and more - evn a baby collection and you can purchase their hand blocked fabric alone as well.

Reclaimed Copper Pots - Cookies Anyone?

March 17th, 2008

To be honest, maybe cookies wouldn’t go great in these jars, but so much more would…

copper pots

These beautiful Roycroft Boxes, or pots plus lids from BTC Elements are made from reclaimed copper that’s been gathered, melted, and hammered into the lovely image you see above. Another perk is that the pots are fair trade with the coppersmiths of Cobre Importers of Central Mexico. Each piece is signed by the artisan who makes it.

With three sizes to choose from you could keep tea, or dried herbs, incense; all sorts of cool things in these, in the bath, bedroom, or kitchen. See more photos, including some nice close ups at BTC Elements.

William Garvey Ltd - Teak Baths, Sinks, & More

March 16th, 2008

William Garvey Ltd makes some of the most lovely, swirly, deep tubs you’ve ever seen, along with other bath items such as sinks and some killer shower trays. Their material of choice for items that will be wet, like their tubs, is teak. Teak is both durable in a wet environment, stable, and with the proper methods sustainable.

William Garvey Ltd has a statement on teak, “Teak grows in the mixed deciduous forests of South Asia. It is not a tropical rain forest tree. It is also found in plantations across the world. We use teak from Myanmar that is harvested in an environmentally sustainable way.”

They have two items I really like. One is their teak non-slip shower tray. I never knew non-slip could be so pretty, did you?

The second item I love is their Helio Baths & Basins. In this case both the sink and bath are gorgeous. Below is the Helio Bath.

I really like the stand alone floor mounted tap as an application for this bath.

William Garvey Ltd also has some nice eco-company principals in place, such as:

  • “a safe and pleasant workplace
  • products that have a long life
  • materials from sustainable sources
  • controlled use of solvents
  • production with minimum waste
  • recycling of waste
  • Committed to supplying furniture and joinery in such a manner as to cause the minimum possible disruption to the environment.”

Ouno Design Textile Pillows

March 15th, 2008

Ouno Design creates and sells so many wonderful items that it’s hard to choose a favorite. No worries though, because I did.

First a little bit about the lovely company. Ouno Design specializes in handmade, modern, future-friendly, sustainable green design. That’s a mouthful, but they pull it off well. Ouno salvages vintage and remnant materials to use in their designs and hand produces pieces that are green and beautiful. Their product line covers items like area rugs, wall hangings, throws and bed covers, huge furniture-like cushions, fashion, artwork, and more.

My favorite items from Ouno Design are the vintage textile pillows.

vintage green pillows

Throw pillows can add snap to a simple couch, bedroom, or living area design. These pillows are made from vintage or salvaged textiles, or occasionally from new organic, sustainably produced fabrics (organic cotton or bamboo). These are not just temporary pillows, they’re beautiful and sturdy enough to become long-term home decor.

They offer many varieties in stock, but it is dependent upon material stock. They note that you can ask for something to see if they have it - i.e. a specific color or texture. Visit Ouno Design to learn more

Current Obsession - The Lapis Table

March 12th, 2008

Honestly, I haven’t ached for a piece of furniture in a good long while, but I adore this table. I lean towards barnwood slab-like tables, so this one is sort of an odd choice for me. However, the organic milk paint really brings the piece to life. It shines, and glistens, and that milky greenish hue is to die for.

Luscious and glowing, correct?

The Lapis Table, available at Fernwalla, is finished in one of three shades, linen (above), antique white, and ebony. Trust me though, the linen is the most stunning.  Milk Paint, if you haven’t heard is stunning and good for the environment. It’s VOC-free, long-lasting, natural, non-toxic paint made from milk casein, clay, earth pigments and lime. I like the lines of this table as well, but the paint seals the deal, no pun intended.

Gorgeous Spun Bamboo Stools

March 8th, 2008

These beautiful Spun Bamboo Stools from Acacia present only one major problem that I can see - which color will you choose? I honestly can’t decide. I’m drawn to the green, but in this case, orange seems like a good decision too. Technically they’re calling the orange color yellow though, it also comes in the nice green, and a vibrant red. All are shiny bliss.

The stools can be used for basic sitting, a plant stand, a foot rest, and more. I can think of many ways to use these. Made in Vietnam from renewable bamboo and lacquered by artists, the stools are 16″ diameter, 18″ high.

Just beautiful.

Ruby Red Stoplight Pendant Lamp

March 2nd, 2008

The Ruby Red Stoplight Pendant Lamp is a unique and very cool hanging light fixture uses discarded traffic light glass lenses. Colored texture against satin aluminum. You could hang them in a series or go it alone in a smaller space. At the very least you’ll have one of the more unique lights on the block.

This is a great way to use a reclaimed item, that otherwise would simply languish in a landfill. Available at Earth Friendly Goods.

Paints That Are Yummy Enough To Eat

February 12th, 2008

Well, maybe not literally yummy enough, but this is the closest to paint eating you’d likely consider. EarthBorn Claypaint was Eco Product of the Year by the House Beautiful Awards 2007.

claypaint

This clay paint is high quality, with a rich, flat matte texture, and allows surfaces to breathe and work well in various humidity situations. Claypaint is also low odor, voc-free, and non-drip. This ‘Eco Chic’ palette below is noted as being nature inspired and calming - which I believe it certainly is. I love the palette; you could do all sorts of rooms with this bunch of colors. Well, the pink really isn’t my style, but I love all the rest especially muddy boots and treehouse.

I think this is muddy boots in the picture below. It looks great on the wall.

Banana Leaf Lamp & Paper Bowl

February 10th, 2008

Brastilo is a great company, with plenty of lovely items for your sustainable home. Brastilo home products are created with renewable and eco-friendly materials. Brastilio has this to say about their wood use:

“Our wood comes entirely from specially planted and managed forests located in the south of Brazil in the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul. Brastilo currently cultivates over 40,500 acres a year in our pine forests, which yield over one million cubic feet of lumber annually. When harvested, the largest pieces are used to make furniture, while smaller pieces are converted to fiberboard and paper.”

Two unique pieces that I like in particular include…

Blue Paper Bowl: Made from recycled newspaper!

Banana Leaf Hanging Lamp: Made from banana leafs. At first I wasn’t sure about this lamp. But I kept going back to look at it. I think, that in the right home it would look great. The colors are unique, so it’s not going to work anywhere, but I can see it in a white heavy space, or maybe natural toned space.
